Freelancers Union

Website
Freelancers Union is a national nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that represents the needs and concerns of America’s growing independent workforce through advocacy, information and service. Independent workers—freelancers, consultants, independent contractors, temps, part-timers, contingent employees and the self-employed—currently make up about 30% of the nation’s workforce.

We exist because we believe that freelancers can help each other. Whether it’s forming a group to get a lower rate on insurance, or answering each other’s professional questions, everyone does better through cooperation.

By coming together in Freelancers Union, independent workers also achieve visibility. The organization works to educate policymakers and the public about the needs of freelancers. We advocate for policy changes, and through our surveys, we do research on the independent workforce that no one else is doing.

Now, we’re helping freelancers to come together in a nationwide online community to find work and share their knowledge. We offer life, disability, and dental insurance throughout the U.S., and health insurance in 31 states.

History

In 1995, Sara Horowitz, a former labor lawyer, founded Working Today to meet the needs of the new, independent workforce. In 2001, Working Today launched the Portable Benefits Network (PBN), to deliver benefits to independent workers in New York City's Silicon Alley. In May 2003, the PBN was renamed Freelancers Union to better reflect the ideas that guide us and all of the services we offer – benefits, resources, and advocacy.

Freelancers Union has received grants and other support from both the State and City of New York, as well as from leading foundations, including the Ford Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, J.P. Morgan Chase, the New York Community Trust, United Hospital Fund, the Rockefeller Family Fund, and others.
